Quick Overview
Artist James Little Wounded explains, "The White Buffalo is a sacred animal and is very respected. This horse dance stick tells of a warrior wanting his power and his white horse to have the help of the White Buffalo's sacred power in battle".
Description
The horse has a mane of braided black horse hair adorned with grouse feathers, turkey feathers, and notched imitation eagle feathers. Its body is carved into a spiraling whirlwind design to symbolize the smoke rising from rocks of the sweatlodge as water is poured over them; at its peak it forms the head of the sacred white buffalo.

A painted line of power runs from the mouth of the white buffalo to the horse's, showing that the horse is imbued with the sacred power of this animal.

The horns of the white buffalo are represented with porcupine claws and its facial features are carved and painted. A beaded buffalo amulet and two imitation eagle feathers wrapped in red trade cloth hang from its neck.

The dance stick is covered with spots of red to symbolize spirit spots. The leg is adorned with brass bells and glass trade beads.

The stick is carved from a single piece of wood. The piece is signed by the artist.
