The Plains Indian war party understood the dramatic show of the headdress to the enemy in battle. The feathers in the warbonnet fan out in brilliant show around and above each warrior’s head. Painted horses, warpaint, and trappings all served to heighten the display, as well. As much as combat was used to wield power over adversaries, war was also viewed much like a game, and each coup in battle won a warrior a golden eagle feather.

Eckman captures the impressive flair of the headdress in his limited edition cast paper sculpture, “Warbonnet.” Exquisitely detailed eagle feathers tipped with horsehair are fashioned into a long tail that drapes the length of a crafted stick tripod.
