Description
This is a 2-cover shield. Underneath the decorated soft leather covering is the painted rawhide shield with a hidden image, known only to the artist and the person who owns this shield.
As Thunder Beings were often attributed with the ability to destroy with thunder and lightning, but also give life with rain, this shield features the physical manifestation of this powerful energy with the Thunderbird image.
The shield presents the Thunderbird as a giant bird-like being with colossal wings, sharp claws, a large tail, and monstrous head. His power is represented by the lines that seem to radiate from his mouth and from his wings. From his body hangs a dangle of grouse feathers.
Below him is a painted symbol accented with brass bells, leather ties, and a dangle of red wool trade cloth with a beaded band and feather fluffs.
To the left of the shield is a drop of imitation eagle feathers and dyed turkey feathers accented with red trade cloth and a beaded form. To the right of the shield hangs a red wool trade cloth drop accented with brass bells.
The top edge of the shield is covered with brown wool trade cloth that follows down the sides and hangs below the shield. It is secured at the sides and top with a leather tie.
