Quick Overview
Before the advent of the Tipi, there was the wigwam which is a bark covered dwelling. When the Plains Indians began to migrate across the vast Prairie they needed a much more compact and easy to move dwelling.
Description
It is told that someone observed a child wrapping a leaf into a cone shape, this led to the model of using a large half circle of hide wrapped around poles, thereby creating the movable Tipi.

But these movable dwellings were also works of art when embellished with hide paintings and quilled door flaps.

In this book, Larry Belitz has spent years looking at actual leather tipi covers, paintings and old photographs. All of this has helped to put together a comprehensive book about the making of a buffalo leather tipi. His descriptions are further enhanced with photographs and firsthand accounts.
