Star Quilts

Modeled after the symbolic Morning Star, which represents new beginnings, Native American Star Quilts are a special and extraordinary part of the cultural practices of the Plains Indians.

These Native American blankets are used to bless and honor joyful times of loved ones when given away at weddings, births, and graduation ceremonies. These symbolic quilts have also been used as alter cloths, placed over sweat lodges, and wrapped around young men awaiting their Vision Quest, or rite of passage.

Each Star Quilt is created from small colorful pieces of diamond-shaped fabric stitched together to create a perfect 8-point star. To the Lakota people, the diamond represents the four directions, a prominent theme throughout their crafted pieces.

The spectacular use of color in these quilts is also meaningful, as these rich hues express the individuality of the artist. Passed down from generation to generation, these traditional Native American blankets hold a unique quality and distinction that will forever be persevered in the craft.
