Breastplates
Breastplates vibrantly symbolize the culture and tradition of the Native American people.
Created by local artisans, these breastplates are made with hair-pipes made from buffalo or bird bones. As these bones were once expensive and hard to obtain, a warrior’s wealth was represented by the number of bones found on the breastplate.
Although breastplates did not always provide the Native American warriors the necessary protection against bullets or arrows, they were revered for their decorative or medicinal qualities.
Breastplates are designed to be tied above the neck and around the waist. These ornamental pieces resemble those found throughout history.
