Prairie Edge

Dorthy Little Elk

Tribe: Lakota

My livelihood is beadwork, it provides my income and also helps to entertain my children. Several of my larger pieces are in collections at the Smithsonian and the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. My work is also featured in museums in Sweden and England.

I learned the art of beadwork at the age of 10, it was taught to me by my grandmother. My designs come from inside my head - I don't use any graph paper because as I work the design develops itself. The colors are influenced by the sunset, sunrise or the rainbow.

I am enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota Oyate of Rosebud, South Dakota and my Indian name is “Wah Wokeya Win” (One Who Helps). It was given to me by my grandmother in Hunka Ceremony when I was 13 years old.
