Quick Overview
This vibrantly colored doll-sized cradleboard commemorates the Native Americans' first observations of the flag as it was carried into battle by the United States military - they believed it to be a symbol of power and protection.
Description
Blending the American flag motif with tribal designs, this cradleboard symbolizes the power and protection believed to come from the stars and stripes, and the greatness of the Lakota nation.

The piece is covered in elk leather and decorated with Italian glass beads in lively hues of red, white, blue, and yellow using the lane/lazy stitch technique. A tiny beaded turtle amulet is added to symbolize good health and longevity.

The frame and slats are made of wood from a Poplar tree and feature decorative tack work. A mobile of beads and brass bells hang from the hood. Dangles of beads and bells also hang from the sides and leather fringe from the bottom. The front of the carrier is secured with 5 leather ties and the inside is lined with felt.
