Description
The mask is made of buffalo hide with the wooly side exposed and is supported with a wooden structure. Buffalo horns are attached to either side of the mask and feature the rough, worn natural texture of the horn cover. The eyes holes are edged with a hide that has been painted red and finished leather lacing and metal beads.
The mask has a crown of pheasant and turkey feathers.
Its lower edge is adorned with a combination of leather lacing tin cones, glass beads, metal bells, trade cloth strips, and turkey feathers.
This mask is mounted on a horse skull attached to a wooden stand. The skull is decorated with a leather wrap and dangles of metal cones, feathers, and red beads.
The wooden stand is embellished with brass tacks and red trade cloth. A buffalo skull made of wood and with a pipestone horn is attached to one side of the stand.
To keep its shape, the back of the mask includes an inner structure of a metal rod and a wooden brace.
The horse skull and buffalo hide are commercially processed.
The piece is signed by the artist.
