Quick Overview
Representing the integral parts of the animal that the Lakota people used for survival, this elk robe features a painted Box & Border design - one of the earliest known Plains Indian painting styles.
Description
The central-most design is the "box" - this shows the animal's internal organs as symbolized through a series of oblong, organic forms. The forms are boldly painted red and blue or delicately suggested with red and yellow outlines.

Surrounding this central design is the "border" - this mimics the outline of the animal's body. The border is decorated with an alternating pattern of red, yellow, and blue geometric shapes.

The robe is finished with imitation eagle feathers, glass beads, tin cones, leather fringe, and red trade cloth dangles.
