Quick Overview
This painted deer robe depicts the Sand Creek Massacre as the heavily armed US Cavalry surround the lodge circle of Black Kettle's people, a group attempting to establish peace.
Description
The colorful band decorated with abalone shell discs and glass beads that runs down the middle of the robe symbolizes Sand Creek. The lodges surrounding the Creek are those of Black Kettle's people. They encircle the creek and fly the colors of the American flag to show they were friendly and to prevent an attack by the US military.

To either side of the robe, heavily armed US soldiers attack the encampment.

The robe is commercially tanned and painted using acrylics.
The piece is signed by the artist.
