Quick Overview
Paying tribute to the close relationship between the Lakota people and the Buffalo Nation, this cradleboard commemorates the ancient tradition of honoring the buffalo in every aspect of life…especially the birth of a child.
Description
Beaded by renowned artist Kevin Fast Horse, this cradleboard features a myriad of colorful animal and geometric designs on a rich, royal blue background.

Symbolizing the life giving Buffalo Nation, a "many buffalo" image charges across the top of the hood in shades of rich browns. The sides of the carrier are decorated with geometric designs in rich yellows, greens, and golds and represent the Great Lakota Nation. A beaded turtle amulet is added as an umbilical cord holder and provides protection for the baby.

The cradle is made of elk leather. The beadwork is done using the lane/lazy stitch technique and rare Society of Venecia glass Italian beads. The frame and slats are poplar wood and decorated with brass tacks arranged in the form of a buffalo hoof print.

Decorative elements include leather fringe, Italian Crow beads on the ties, a mobile of brass bells across the hood's opening, and beaded bell dangles at the sides. The carrier is lined with dark blue felt and the front is secured with 7 leather ties.
