Quick Overview
The greatest honor a warrior could achieve on the battlefield was to count coup (touch an enemy in battle). Shorter weapons such as a skull cracker allowed the warrior to not only fight effectively from horseback, but it also allowed him to draw his enemy in at close range, thereby counting coup.
Description
This skull cracker features a willow handle wrapped in deer leather. The weapon's deadly force is at the tip of the handle - the leather has been extended past the tip to encase a round river stone, which gives the weapon a swivel action and increases the force of a blow against an enemy’s skull.
The leather wrap is sewn together with imitation sinew. The handle is adorned with wrapped beadwork in shades of blue and red, as well as eight dangles of horse hair and tin cones. An aging process has been applied to the piece to give it a rustic, antique look.
