Description
Clark David Wissler (1870-1947) was one of America's foremost anthropologists of the early 1900's. Starting as an assistant at the American Museum of History in 1902, he worked under his famed mentor, Franz Boas, whose position he subsequently assumed. During his long career, he wrote numerous articles and six books on the subject of Native Americans.

"Costumes of the Plains Indians" was first published in 1915 by AMNH as part of a series of anthropological papers reflecting the results of various research endeavors conducted by the museum's Department of Anthropology. Costumes is a comparative study which addresses the forms and distribution of Plains Indian men's shirts, coats, and women's dresses. For it, Wissler examined specimens in the museum's collections.
