Quick Overview
The history of masking horses in North America is more than five centuries old, introduced with the Spanish horse of Columbus and Cortes. Surviving rock paintings document the Indians use of armored horses, wearing full head coverings, by the early 1700s.
Description
After the end of inter-tribal warfare in the 1880s, horse masks continued in Indian usage on parade occasions. Fine examples from the 19th century, still in the possession of proud descendants of their makers and which have appeared in Indian parades during the past year, are illustrated herein.

This survey of the masking tradition, therefore, extends from 1494 to the present day.

Over 200 illustrations, more than 150 in color, illustrating 45 historic Indian horse masks from museum and private collections are included in this volume. Most date from the 19th century. All but one were made prior to 1915. Scores of other masks are illustrated by 18th and 19th century Indian paintings and drawings on rock, leather, cloth and paper and by historic photographs.
